Vatican releases itinerary for Pope Leo XIV's November trip to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru

Pope Leo XIV will travel to South America from November 6 to 17, 2026, visiting Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. It will be his first trip to the region as pope. He holds Peruvian citizenship and spent two decades as a priest and bishop in Peru. The Holy See has published a detailed itinerary covering 10 cities, with pastoral meetings, liturgical celebrations and times of prayer.

The trip begins in Uruguay, from November 6 to 8. Leo will visit Montevideo, Paysandú and Florida. His schedule includes a prayer vigil at the Estadio Centenario and a Mass at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Thirty-Three, on the feast of the country's patroness. The motto for this leg is "Les anuncio una gran alegría" ("I bring you news of great joy"), taken from the angel's announcement to the shepherds in the Gospel of Luke.

On November 8 the pope will travel to Argentina, where he will stay until November 11. It will be the first papal visit to the country in almost 40 years, since St. John Paul II traveled there in 1987. Up to seven million faithful are expected to take part in the scheduled events.

Leo will land at Jorge Newbery Airport in Buenos Aires at 4:30 p.m. on November 8. He will first pay tribute to General José de San Martín in the square that bears his name, followed by a welcome ceremony at the Casa Rosada, the presidential palace, where he will meet President Javier Milei. He will then address government officials and the diplomatic corps at the Palacio Libertad.

On November 9 the pope will visit the Pequeño Cottolengo Don Orione in Claypole, where he will meet workers and people with disabilities. At 11:30 a.m. he will celebrate Mass at the Monumento de los Españoles. In the afternoon he will take part in a meeting with the world of work at the Catholic University of Argentina, an interreligious dialogue at the Palacio San Martín and vespers at the Metropolitan Cathedral.

On November 10 he will travel to Córdoba, where he will celebrate Mass on the esplanade of the Military Aviation School and meet the pastoral community at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption. He will return to Buenos Aires to lead a prayer vigil with young people at the Monumento de los Españoles, where he will also give an address.

On his last day in Argentina, November 11, Leo will visit a federal prison complex and celebrate Mass in the square in front of the Basilica of Our Lady of Luján. The motto for this leg is "Bienvenidos todos. Vayan y anuncien" ("Everyone is welcome. Go and proclaim"). The farewell ceremony will take place at Ministro Pistarini International Airport in Ezeiza before he continues on to Peru.

The final leg is in Peru, from November 11 to 17, with stops in Lima, Chiclayo, Cusco and Pucallpa. Leo was bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023. He will celebrate several Masses in the country, including one at the Pampas de Pimentel, where about one million people are expected.

The motto for this leg is "Abramos el corazón" ("Let us open our hearts"), a call to renew the faith and build fraternity. Leo will also meet grassroots groups in Cusco and honor indigenous peoples in Pucallpa, where he will celebrate Mass in the Peruvian Amazon.

Argentina is the homeland of his predecessor, Pope Francis, who never returned to the country after his election.

The Argentine government, the Argentine Bishops' Conference and the apostolic nunciature have been working together to organize the visit.
