Pope Leo XIV has approved a note linked to a Second Vatican Council document on interreligious dialogue that includes a reference to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. The quotation is taken from the address Benedict XVI delivered on September 12, 2006, at the University of Regensburg during his visit to Germany, in which he discussed the relationship between faith and reason.
In that lecture, Benedict XVI quoted a text by Professor Theodore Khoury on a 14th-century dialogue between the Byzantine emperor Manuel II Palaiologos and a Persian scholar. In the exchange, the emperor criticized the teaching of Muhammad, saying he had ordered that his faith be spread by the sword. Benedict XVI's words prompted an international controversy, with criticism coming especially from the Muslim world.
The Second Vatican Council promoted respect and cooperation among different religious denominations.
