The Anglican Church of Canada has approved new liturgies to bless euthanasia, in a decision adopted during the meeting of its General Synod held June 27 to July 1, 2026, in Calgary, Alberta. The resolution allows Anglican clergy to offer a rite of blessing to those who choose that option in their final moments of life.
The General Synod, which brings together representatives of the dioceses of the Anglican Church of Canada, presented the approval of the liturgies as a pastoral response to the situations faced by the faithful in cases of extreme suffering.
The decision drew a range of reactions inside and outside Canadian Anglicanism. It comes amid wider discussion of euthanasia and assisted suicide, which has advanced in several countries and has been debated within different religious traditions.
