Cardinal Cobo calls grandparents a treasure for families and the community

Cardinal José Cobo, the archbishop of Madrid, preached a homily for the sixth World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly, held Sunday in the Almudena Cathedral. The day is intended to draw attention to the place of older people in the life of the Church and of society, and to the wisdom and experience they bring.

Cobo said that "grandparents are a treasure for the family and the community," and pointed to the part they play in handing on values and traditions. He called on society to recognize the contribution of older people, who are often a source of love and unconditional support within their families.

The day is held every year and aims to bring the generations closer together and encourage respect for the elderly. Cobo also said that "loneliness is one of the greatest concerns our elderly face," and urged everyone to work for more inclusive and supportive environments.

The celebration included prayer and music, and many of the faithful attended to honor grandparents. It ended with a Mass that included intentions for all the elderly of the community.
