Archdiocese of New York Offers $800 Million to Settle 1,300 Abuse Claims

Thirteen hundred plaintiffs who say they were abused as children by priests or lay employees of the Archdiocese of New York are considering a proposed settlement of $800 million.
The New York Times reported that the offer lets each plaintiff choose between a single payment of $250,000 or taking the case before an arbitrator to seek a larger award.
All of the plaintiffs must accept the terms for the settlement to take effect. If the proposal fails and the archdiocese seeks bankruptcy protection, the plaintiffs would face a prolonged period of uncertainty and a more complicated path to resolving the litigation.
