Peru allocates $18.8 million for Pope Leo XIV's November visit
The Peruvian government has set aside $18.8 million, drawn from the Economy Ministry's contingency reserve, to cover costs tied to Pope Leo XIV's November trip, which will also take him to Argentina and Uruguay
The government of Peru has allocated $18.8 million to cover costs related to Pope Leo XIV's visit to the country. The sum, equal to 63,220,991 soles, will be transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under Supreme Decree No. 176-2026-EF, published September 5, 2026, in the official gazette El Peruano.
The decree, signed by President Keiko Fujimori and Economy Minister Elmer Cuba, states that the money will come from the contingency reserve of the Ministry of Economy and Finance. The costs were not included in the foreign ministry's 2026 institutional budget. The decree says the funds may be used only for the authorized purposes, under the responsibility of the relevant public officials.
Papal itinerary in South America
The visit is scheduled for November 11 to 16, 2026, as part of a trip that also includes stops in Argentina and Uruguay. In Peru, the pope, a former bishop of Chiclayo and apostolic administrator of Callao, will visit Lima, Callao, Chiclayo, Pucallpa and Cusco.
On September 3, Peru's bishops announced a collection to help pay for the visit. Bishop Carlos García Camader, president of the Peruvian Bishops' Conference (CEP), said the pope will spend two days in Chiclayo and will be in Callao for a morning, afternoon or evening. He said the program is still a draft and has yet to be made official by the pope.
