Seville neighborhood marks 24 years since coronation of Our Lady of Sorrows
Archbishop Jesús Sanz of Oviedo presided over a solemn Mass on September 15 in the Cerro del Águila district of Seville, 24 years after the image of Our Lady of Sorrows was crowned there
The Cerro del Águila district of Seville marked the 24th anniversary of the coronation of Our Lady of Sorrows with a solemn Mass presided over by the archbishop of Oviedo.
On September 15 the neighborhood recalled the day when the archbishop of Seville at the time, Archbishop Carlos Amigo Vallejo, crowned the image of Our Lady of Sorrows in the parish. Twenty-four years later, the archbishop of Oviedo, Archbishop Jesús Sanz, presided over the commemorative solemn Mass alongside the current archbishop of Seville, Archbishop José Ángel Saiz.
Despite the heat, the faithful turned out in large numbers to honor their Virgin on a day that coincides with the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. In his homily, Sanz spoke about several Gospel passages that point to the role of the Virgin Mary, who had been told in advance of the painful outcome of Christ's Passion.
Sanz noted the connection that has formed in the Cerro del Águila between the neighborhood, the parish and the confraternity, and called it a sign of the cohesion of this part of Seville. The floral offering drew children, young people and adults, men and women, who came forward to place flowers before the image of the Virgin as a sign of devotion and of the neighborhood's unity around her.
