Opus Dei Prelate Fernando Ocariz Visits Students and Families in Honduras

Monsignor Fernando Ocáriz, prelate of Opus Dei, visited the Taular Technical Institute in Tegucigalpa on August 12, 2026, as part of a pastoral trip through Central America that has included stops in Guatemala and San Pedro Sula, Honduras. The trip runs through August 15 in El Salvador.

Students, teachers and graduates received Ocáriz at the institute, which has been operating for close to 30 years, and spoke to him about the education they received there. Germán, a former student who came to Taular from Guayabillas, said his schooling allowed him to become an industrial engineer and reach his personal and professional goals.

Christopher, a student, spoke about crime in his neighborhood and described Taular as a safe place where he has found friends and support. Azael, the father of a student, described a change in his spiritual life after the death of his own father and his son's illness, which he said led him to experience the grace of God and the closeness of the Virgin Mary.

Academic, human and spiritual formation

At the end of the meeting, Ocáriz thanked those who had spoken. "Thank you very much, I have learned a great deal from you," he said.

In Tegucigalpa, Ocáriz also met with families. He recalled the role Honduras played in the life of St. Josemaría Escrivá, founder of Opus Dei, who took refuge in the Honduran legation in Madrid during the Spanish Civil War. He used that episode to speak about God's presence in times of suffering and uncertainty.

Sofi, a medical student, said she struggles with prayer. Ocáriz replied that worries can be part of an authentic conversation with God. Those at the meeting also discussed vocation and passing on the spirit of Opus Dei to younger generations, and he said generosity and commitment should be cultivated at every stage of life.

Close of the Tegucigalpa meeting

The gathering ended with an early celebration of the anniversary of Ocáriz's priestly ordination. He was given a gift recalling the protection of the Blessed Sacrament during difficult times. Young people from the area performed music from Honduras.
